The PS5 is one of the best looking consoles ever made. It is sleek, futuristic, and bright white. You can keep your PS5 clean with these easy steps below.
How To Clean PS5 Without Opening
If you own a PS5, it is important to keep it clean. The PS5 is one of the quietest consoles ever made, but the reason for that is because of a gigantic fan inside the PS5 that keeps it cool. The only downside? A fan means dust – and lots of it.
If you’ve ever opened a console or computer before, you will know that they can get incredibly dusty over time. The fans inside the PS5 are constantly sucking air in to cool down the system because the games it plays are extremely graphics-intensive.
Although you might not think your air is dusty, overtime it will build up and cleaning it is important if you want your PS5 to last a long time.
Is Dust Bad For My PS5?
Dust is an inevitable part of owning a PS5. While some dust build up will happen, the real danger is that too much dust builds up over time and causes your PS5 to overheat. Sometimes, too much dust can cause a hardware failure as well. So while dust can cause damage, you can simply clean your PS5 regularly to avoid this problem.
How to Clean A PS5
There are several ways you can go about cleaning your PS5. If you are comfortable taking apart your PS5 to clean it or if you want to clean your PS5 without opening it, there are different methods.
You will need several tools for this job, but nothing serious.
- Vacuum for the dust
- Microfiber cloth to wipe
- Compressed air
- Cleaning brushed for hard to reach areas
Most of these items you most like have around your house, but if you want to clean your PS5 easily you will need all four items.
The official documentation from Sony recommends that you remove dust from the vents with a vacuum. With your vacuum, clean the vents carefully, making sure to not scratch the surface of your PS5. If there is dust remaining, take the compressed air and spray the vent down. You can also take a brush and clean between each vent. Finally, run the vacuum over the vent one last time to pick up loose particles.
Most of the time this is where you would stop the cleaning process. The vents are the only noticeable external area where dust can build up, so from the outside your PS5 should be dust-free.
Of course, for the more obsessive among us, you may want to open up your PS5 and get inside. Here’s how we recommend doing that.
Note: before you proceed, make sure to leave any warranty sticks you see untouched. By removing these stickers you can void your warranty.
How To Clean The Inside Of Your PS5
- Prepare a dust-free work surface, such as the kitchen table
- Unplug your PS5 and make sure you are disconnected from the power
- Place your PS5 on your prepared work surface in the sideways position
- Gently pull the faceplate off of the PS5. You should hear a small popping sound as you remove them. See the video below for an easy tutorial to avoid any damage.
- With your vacuum, suck up any easily removable dust. You can also spray compressed air around the interior of the PS5 to loosen up any dust.
- Take your brush and gently brush the interior of the PS5.
- Finish with a final vacuum to clean up any remaining dust inside.
- Before you are done, check the fins and the exterior of the console for any areas that still hold dust. Using some compressed air and a vacuum should remove any remaining dust easily.

How to Keep Dust Out Of My PS5
Now that your PS5 is finally clean, how can you stop dust from building up again? Here are the best ways to keep dust from building up:
- Store your PS5 off the ground in a cabinet or on a shelf.
- Give your PS5 plenty of space to breath, it is good to have lots of open air around the unit
- Clean the exterior vents more frequently to minimize the amount of dust getting trapped inside
- Wipe down the area around the PS5 on a regular basis to minimize dust build up
How Often Should I Clean My PS5?
While you should clean your PS5 on a regular basis, different environments will have different amounts of dust so it will vary. If the PS5 is used heavily, it is probably good to check at least once per month and clean the exterior vents.
A serious interior cleaning does not need to happen as often and is ultimately up to the user. Some users will want to do more cleaning than others, and that is ok. We would recommend checking the interior of your PS5 every 6 months to see how dusty things are getting. From there you can get some kind of idea when you should clean the inside of your PS5.
