Supplies needed:
- Paper towels
- Old cloth
- Soft brush
- Gloves
- Trash bag
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Fabric scraper
- Spray bottle
- Vacuum
Optional:
First things first, strap on some rubber gloves – it’s time to get to work. Second, roll down those vehicle windows! Use that natural airflow to your advantage to start airing out pungent odors (more steps below on how to address lingering odors).
Tackle Solid Waste
You will want to use materials that are easy to throw away such as paper towels or old newspapers. Scoop or grab solid waste and put it into a trash bag. Continue until mostly all of the solid waste is removed. If waste is liquid, sprinkle baking soda into the liquid. Allow this mixture to dry and once the mixture turns solid, use the same method above to remove waste.
Use a fabric scraper to peel up any waste that is stuck in the vehicle. Use a cordless vacuum to pick up smaller pieces of waste.
Treat the Affected Area
Now let’s make a cleaning solution! You will want to use a 1:1 ratio of vinegar to warm water. Give the bottle a shake to mix the solution. It is always encouraged to test cleaning solutions on a small hidden area of your vehicle upholstery before using it to treat the entire vehicle. Spray the solution onto the affected area, dampen the area but do not soak. Scrub with an old rag or soft brush to loosen any waste still clinging on. Repeat the process until visible waste or discoloration is gone.
Treat Lingering Smells
While the visible waste and stains may be gone, it’s essential to be extra diligent in treating any smells that may arise with heat. Let’s make a “smell solution cleaner!” In a bowl, mix together 1 cup of water and ¼ cup of baking soda. Mix until well combined and no baking soda lumps remain. Add in 3 tablespoons of vinegar.
Dip a soft brush or old rag into the “smell solution” and gently scrub into the impacted area. Allow “smell solution” to set for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, use a rag, dampened with water, to remove the “smell solution.”
If there is still a lingering smell, sprinkle baking soda on affected areas and leave overnight. Vacuum baking soda up in the morning. Repeat this process as needed.
