The Apple Magic Keyboard is one of the best keyboards you can purchase today. Its low profile and minimal design create a near-perfect typing experience. But like all things that get used frequently, they tend to get dirty over time.
Luckily, there are several easy ways to keep your Apple Magic Keyboard clean.
How To Clean Apple Magic Keyboard
The easiest way to clean your Apple Magic Keyboard is with a slightly damp microfiber cloth. With the damp cloth, gently wipe the keyboard down until the surface is clean. If necessary, you can use compressed air to clean harder to reach areas.
How To Clean Apple Magic Keyboard With Water
You might think that you need some fancy cleaning solution to clean your keyboard, but all you really need is a bit of water and a microfiber cloth. Microfiber cloths are great for cleaning electronics because they are especially good at pulling up dirt and grime from surfaces.
You might be nervous to place a damp cloth on your electronic keyboard, but just make sure the cloth is damp and not wet and you will be fine. Before you begin cleaning, it is best practice to turn off your Magic keyboard to be safe.
If you are concerned about damaging your keyboard, we recommend allowing your keyboard to dry overnight because using it again – but this is really not necessary.
Once you have your slightly damp rag, wipe down the surface of the keyboard, focusing on the keys themselves. Especially on white Apple Magic Keyboards, the keys can become very dirty. Keep wiping the keys gently until you are satisfied.
If there is dirt or dust you cannot remove with the microfiber, use either compressed air or a q-tip to clean harder to reach areas. We have had the best luck spraying the area first with compressed air to loosen and dirt or dust and then using the q-tip to clean the area. If you want to dampen your q-tip, that can help as well.
At this point your keyboard should be looking much better. But just in case it isn’t, we have a few more methods to show you.
How To Clean Apple Magic Keyboard With Rubbing Alcohol
If your keyboard has stubborn dirt you cannot remove, you can clean your Apple Magic Keyboard with rubbing alcohol. Rubbing alcohol is a great cleaner for electronics because it evaporates so quickly and cuts through dirt and grease.
The cleaning process will look similar to the one above. Dampen a microfiber cloth with rubbing alcohol and wipe down your keyboard. For any cracks or harder to reach areas, use compressed air and a q-tip with some rubbing alcohol.
Isopropyl alcohol is especially good at cutting through grease. You might not think your keyboard is greasy, but in reality our fingers have lots of oils that are transferred to our keyboards every day.
After you are finished cleaning, allow your keyboard to air dry for a few minutes before using. Because rubbing alcohol dries so quickly, you can use your keyboard almost immediately after cleaning.
How To Clean Apple Magic Keyboard After Spill
Sometimes, we spill on our keyboards. It might be coffee, tea, or that delicious milkshake that all of a sudden is spread over our entire keyboard. Thankfully, keyboards are pretty resilient as far as electronics go.
The first thing you want to do is wipe down any excess liquid off of the keyboard. With either a microfiber cloth or paper towel, try to remove as much of the spill as possible. Now you can see what you are working with.
Depending on what you spilled, you might want to clean your keyboard with rubbing alcohol to remove any sticky residue. Dampen a microfiber cloth with rubbing alcohol and clean the surface of your keyboard. In addition, use a q-tip with rubbing alcohol to clean around the individual keys.
At this point, your keyboard should be clean. The next step is to prevent any internal damage (if possible).
Fill a plastic tub with rice and bury your keyboard in the rice for 24 hours. Rice is extremely absorbent and will pull any moisture out of your keyboard. A day or two later, remove your keyboard and power it on. Hopefully, it connects to your Mac and powers on. If not, you may need to consider a replacement due to water damage.
