Cleaning your boots is a multi-step process that will restore your boots with a fresh, clean look (and maybe some healthy patina). Follow the steps below to learn how to clean leather Frye boots.
Materials needed:
- Soft bristled brush
- Old toothbrush
- Mink oil
- Saddle soap
- Microfiber cloth (3)
Step 1: Prepare Your Boots For Cleaning
Before any in-depth cleaning can begin we need to prepare the boots. Remove the laces from your Frye leather boots so you can have easy access around the tongue of your boot.
Next, with a soft bristled brush, wipe down the exterior of your boots. You want to remove any extra dirt or debris that is on the surface of the boots. Make sure to brush around the tongue area as it can be a challenging area to clean.
Step 2: Clean With Saddle Soap
Grab your microfiber cloth and dampen it slightly with tap water. Gently apply a quarter-sized amount of saddle soap onto the cloth and begin rubbing your Frye boots in small circles.
The saddle soap will gently clean the leather and remove surface dirt. This is important because when you apply the mink oil, you want to apply it to a clean surface.
After you’ve scrubbed the entire surface of your boots with saddle soap, take a clean damp rag and wipe off any residue. Let your boots dry fully before moving to step 3.
Step 3: Condition With Mink Oil
Apply a quarter-sized amount of mink oil to a clean microfiber cloth and massage the mink oil into the leather. Work slowly to ensure the mink oil fully coats the exterior of your boots.
It can also be helpful to work some mink oil along the Goodyear welt (the stitching going into the sole). This area gets dirty easily and will benefit from the conditioning.
When it looks like your boots are fully conditioned, you can re-lace your boots. Allow the mink oil to soak into the boots for an hour or two before wearing.
