The PS5 is one of the best looking consoles ever made. It is sleek, futuristic, and bright white. But very quickly your PS5 fan can become filled with dust and dirt. Here how to clean a PS5 fan is a few easy steps.
How To Clean PS5 Fan
Unlike past playstation models, the PS5 is one of the easiest to clean. Sony has made the fan easy to access, so it is relatively simple to remove the fan and remove any dust.
Before beginning, it is important to note that these sorts of activities can void the warranty of your PS5. We recommend leaving any warranty stickers untouched if you open up your PS5 in order to preserve your PS5 warranty.
Is Dust Bad For My PS5?
Dust is an inevitable part of owning a PS5. While some dust build up will happen, the real danger is that too much dust builds up over time and causes your PS5 to overheat. When too much dust accumulates on the fan, it cannot cool the PS5 as easily.
Sometimes, too much dust can cause a hardware failure as well. So while dust can cause damage, you can simply clean your PS5 regularly to avoid this problem.
How To Clean A PS5 Fan
The PS5 fan is easier to clean than you might think. To start, you are going to need a few tools.
- T8H torx screwdriver
- Household vacuum
- Comressed air
- A vacuum brush attachment (optional)
You probably already have most of these items, but be sure to have a T8H torx screwdriver on hand because you won’t be able to access the fan without it. They are typically very cheap and can be purchased for around $5.
How To Clean The PS5 Fan
First, prepare a dust-free work surface, such as the kitchen table. Unplug your PS5 and make sure you are disconnected from the power.
Place your PS5 on your prepared work surface in the sideways position
Gently pull the faceplate off of the PS5. You should hear a small popping sound as you remove them. We recommend watching this video before removing your side panels to minimize any damages:

With your vacuum, suck up any loose dust. You can also spray compressed air around the interior of the PS5 to loosen up any dust. With both sides removed, you should be looking at something like this:
Your next step is removing the cover on top of the fan, which will require removing the four screws holding it down.
After removing the screws, the cover should easily come off.
There is a small sticker next to the fan. You will need to remove this sticker to remove the fan, BUT it will void your warranty. In addition, remove the screw underneath the sticker.
One the last steps is removing this cover to access the port underneath to disconnect the fan. Gently remove the cover.
After removing the cover, unplug the fan. You may need to wiggle the plug gently to remove the plug.
Now your fan should easily slide out.
Now that your PS5 fan is removed, it needs to be cleaned. With your vacuum, remove any loose dust. Spray down the fan with compressed air to loosen any remaining dust and wipe the fan down with the microfiber cloth. Give your fan a final vacuum before re-installing.
How To Keep Dust Out Of My PS5
- Store your PS5 off the ground in a cabinet or on a shelf.
- Give your PS5 plenty of space to breath, it is good to have lots of open air around the unit
- Clean the exterior vents more frequently to minimize the amount of dust getting trapped inside
- Wipe down the area around the PS5 on a regular basis to minimize dust build up
In addition, the official documentation from Sony recommends that you remove dust from the vents with a vacuum. With your vacuum, clean the vents carefully, making sure to not scratch the surface of your PS5.
If there is dust remaining, take the compressed air and spray the vent down. You can also take a brush and clean between each vent. Finally, run the vacuum over the vent one last time to pick up loose particles.
How Often Should I Clean My PS5?
While you should clean your PS5 on a regular basis, different environments will have different amounts of dust so it will vary. If the PS5 is used heavily, it is probably good to check at least once per month and clean the exterior vents.
A serious interior cleaning does not need to happen as often and is ultimately up to the user. Some users will want to do more cleaning than others, and that is ok.
We would recommend checking the interior of your PS5 every 6 months to see how dusty things are getting. From there you can get some kind of idea when you should clean the inside of your PS5.
